LAHORE: Former Pakistani cricketer and umpire Muhammad Nazir Jr has died at the age of 78 after a long illness, his son Noman Nazir confirmed on Thursday.
Nazir was suffering from a severe illness and was undergoing treatment in a private hospital in the capital of Punjab since last week before his unfortunate death.
The Lahore-born cricketer was seriously injured five years ago after being involved in a road accident that led to his health deteriorating.
The right-handed cricketer, who has represented Pakistan in 14 Test matches and four ODIs, has taken 34 wickets throughout his international career. He took seven wickets in the first innings of his first Test – the first Pakistani player to achieve the feat.
He then continued his umpiring career and officiated 15 ODIs and five Tests within a short period.
Nazir Junior was respected for his cricketing acumen and contributions in nurturing raw talent.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and the cricket fraternity expressed their deep sorrow and grief over the sad demise of the former cricketer and umpire.
Naqvi praised Nazir Junior’s services to Pakistan Cricket. “On behalf of the PCB, I express my condolences and sadness over the demise of former cricketer Mohammad Nazir,” he said in a statement.
“We extend our deepest sympathy and share the grief of his friends and family. His contributions to Pakistan cricket will always be remembered.”
