I thought that when 2024 started Single settlementunlike isekai shonen, would be the biggest new show of the year, but as the year went on, I realized that no matter how popular this show was, it wasn’t capturing the hearts of legions of anime fans on social media the way it had. expected. Instead, it was Dandadana completely different kind of shounen that combines romantic comedy with aliens and the supernatural, has set anime audiences on fire over the past few months. It turns out that throwing every anime trope into a blender doesn’t result in an unwatchable mess; Instead, it’s one of the best new shows in years.
Aliens, yokai and superpowers
Dandadan It follows the cheerful Momo Ayase, who, like Fox Mulder, has chosen to believe in aliens, and the saddened Ken Takakura, nicknamed Okaron for his interest in magic, as they inadvertently gain superpowers that allow them to fight against malevolent spirits and alien invaders. And evil humans. This seems like the main focus of the series, and in a way it is, but the duo’s motivation is to recover the part of Okaron’s body that he lost after he became possessed and gained the ability to transform into a demonic form. It’s silly, comedic, and wildly over-the-top, but somehow, the show manages to balance that with moments of raw emotion.
Episode 7, “To a Kinder World”, is one of the highest-rated anime episodes in history on IMDb, with a rating of 9.7, dropping the crude humor and fanservice found in most series for a story focused on one series. Yokai (spirits), silky acrobats. The yōkai’s backstory is so tragic and heartbreaking that after the episode aired, social media was filled with fans posting videos of themselves crying. Dandadan is not for everyone
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention this one exception that could occur Dandadan A difficult watch for some, and it’s not about crude humor or searching for Okaron’s missing parts, but that’s how Momo is put through the wringer. There are implied scenes of assault, including the cliffhanger scene in the first season at the hot springs, that stand out compared to most other shounen. The blatant moments of fan service have also fallen out of favor in recent years, but the show embraces them, especially where Momo is concerned, so for everything the show does to push anime storytelling forward, there’s still a foot stuck in the ’90s.
