Ilorin authorities take action against open defecation: three buildings sealed Aitrend

In a decisive move to tackle the public health risks posed by open defecation, authorities in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, have sealed three buildings found to be engaged in the unsanitary practice. This action is part of a wider initiative to promote hygiene and foster a cleaner environment in the region.

The monitoring operation was carried out by a team comprising environmental health officers within the Ministry of Environment in Ilorin East Local Government Area. According to the team leader, these measures were taken after a thorough investigation and interactions with those involved. The operation underlines the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards practices that undermine public health and sanitation.

Apart from plugging the three buildings in Adualere area, local residents along Obbo-Ayegunle road have been instructed to clean their drainage systems, clogged with waste. This measure is essential to ensure that water can flow freely, preventing flooding and other health risks associated with stagnant water.

Also, an illegal poultry farm located in Irewolede area of Ilorin has faced repercussions for non-compliance with environmental regulations. The company was fined N50,000 and ordered to acquire a dustbin to properly manage its waste. Authorities said the farm quickly complied, purchasing the necessary equipment after being sanctioned.

During a briefing on these coercive measures, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, Commissioner for Environment, highlighted the importance of responsible waste management. She warned residents of the dangers of indiscriminate dumping of waste, which can lead to the spread of communicable diseases. The state government has made arrangements for efficient waste collection to ensure that citizens can dispose of their waste safely, without compromising their own health or that of their neighbors.

Hajia Buge noted that Kwara State has set a precedent in its fight against littering and unsanitary practices, winning praise for its commitment to a “cleaner Kwara”. She presented the government’s vision to create a hygienic atmosphere that supports both social and economic activities through health-conscious practices.

Additionally, the commissioner reassured the public that legal action would be taken against those who violate environmental laws. She reiterated the consequences of non-compliance, saying violators could be subject to fines and other sanctions, as stipulated in existing environmental guidelines. Such measures aim not only to punish wrongdoing, but also to deter such behavior in the future.

Hajia Buge took a moment to express her gratitude to the current Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for his unwavering support for the initiatives of the Ministry of Environment. His support has been crucial in fostering a clean and safe environment for the people of Kwara State, thereby enabling the ministry to effectively fulfill its mandate.

Along with the government’s efforts, the commissioner called on residents to play an active role in maintaining cleanliness in their communities. She stressed that collaboration between government and the public is essential to support an ongoing initiative aimed at preserving a safe, clean and healthy Kwara State.

The government remains steadfast in its determination to maintain a clean environment, and it is clear that opposing practices such as open defecation is just one of many measures being taken to make the Kwara healthier.

As this initiative progresses, we hope that each individual will take ownership of their role in promoting a cleaner, safer community, reflecting the qualities that define a responsible and caring society.
