Kia Recalling more than 80,000 electric and hybrid vehicles in the United States due to improper airbag and seat belt deployment, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Saturday.

Affected vehicles are the 2023-2025 Kia Niro, 2023-2025 Niro EV and the 2023-2025 Niro Reging-In Hybrid.

According to NHTSA, the floor wiring assembly under the front passenger seat may become damaged, which may then prevent the front airbags and seat belts from deploying properly.

“Improperly deploying airbags and seat belts or an airbag that deploys unintentionally can increase the risk of injury in a crash,” he said.

Vehicle owners will be informed in March whether they should take their vehicles to their nearest dealership. Dealers will inspect, replace and restart the ground wiring assembly, if necessary, free of charge, NHTSA said.
