
The Irish boxer of super weight John Cony died at the age of 28 after suffering from a brain injury during the battle to defend the Celtic title against his opponent Wales Nathan Huils last week, a promoter announced on Saturday.
“Through complete destruction, we have to announce that after a week of fighting for his life, John Cony died unfortunately,” said Mark Dnlop of MHD Promotions on social media.
The 28 -year -old was in the hospital in Belfast after the surgery.
In a previous statement, Mark Dunloop, Cony Mark Dunloop promoter, said: “After the Battle of John Cony, the Ellster Hall on Saturday evening, Josh was evaluated by the medical team at the site at the British Boxing Council and transferred quickly to the Royal Belfast Victoria Hospital in favor of more Treatment.
Upon arrival at RVH, he discovered that John had a skull bleeding and underwent immediate surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.
He had left the ring on a stretcher after a battle last Saturday in the Ulster Hall in the city in the ninth round.
“This tragedy is to inspect this wonderful young boxer,” said Barry McGagan, former world champion of the feather weight.
