In the United States and Australia, two researchers have discovered important mechanisms that prevent B cells from attacking the body’s own tissues in autoimmune diseases such as arthritis, lupus and multiple sclerosis-and have won a prestigious prize.
Normally, the body’s immune system protects us from viruses, bacteria and foreign substances. However, in autoimmune diseases, the immune system begins to attack the tissues in the body rather.
The researchers have long tried to discover the cause of autoimmune diseases. But, Christopher Goodnow and David Nemazee, regardless of each other, have adopted a new approach.
They asked why we do not develop all these diseases. Their concentration was on B cells which, with white blood cells and T cells, are the constituent elements of our complex immune system.
“They have given us a new detailed understanding of the mechanisms that normally prevent defective B cells from attacking tissues in the body, explaining why most of us are not affected by autoimmune diseases”, ” said Olle KämpeMember of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and chairman of the Crafoord Prize Committee which granted the Pair 6 million Swedish Kronor ($ 600,000).

“This also opens the way to the development of new forms of therapy that can possibly cure these diseases – or could prevent them in the future,” a professor of clinical immunology at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences told.
For Christopher Goodnow, the news of the Crafoord Prize was a wonderful surprise.
“This is the most incredible phone call in my life!” said professor of the School of Biomedical Sciences at the Institute of Futures Cellulars at the University of New South Wales.
“I am honored … and it’s also wonderful to share the prize with David Nemazee. We were friendly competitors working in different places in the world, and we arrived at additional answers at a time when most work in the field did not believe that tolerance to B cells was one thing. ”
