Nissan is expected to announce a jump in its cost reduction plans which will see 20,000 jobs worldwide, according to reports in Japan.

The car manufacturer, which employs around 6,000 workers in its tentacular manufacturing operations in Sunderland, had already suggested last November that 9,000 roles would take place in the midst of low sales and rising costs.

But the Japanese broadcaster NHK said on Monday that it expected the total to be more than double.

Nissan, who had not yet commented on the complaint, should reveal quarterly results on Tuesday morning.

They should show a net loss of up to 3.8 billion pounds sterling due to a series of depreciations on the value of its operations.

They will be the first results that the company declared since the appointment of a new managing director last month.

If the job cuts report is true, this would be a 15% reduction in the company’s global workforce.
