While American health officials have just revised the American food supply, they take a new look at infantile.

The United States Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., ordered Food and Drug Administration to review nutrients and other ingredients for infants, which fills the bottles of millions of American babies. The effort, nicknamed “Operation Stork Speed”, is the first deep look at the ingredients since 1998.

“THE Fda Using all the resources and authorities at its disposal to ensure that infant preparation products are safe and healthy for families and children that rely on them, “said Kennedy.

About three -quarters of American infants consume formulas in the first six months of life, with around 40% of receiving it as the only source of nutrition, according to the centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The formula has been widely used in the United States for about six decades, fueling generations of prospered infants, said Dr. Steven Abrams, infant nutrition expert at the University of Texas.

The wider scientific community has called for a reassessment of infant preparations for years and “fully supports this idea of a complete look,” he said.

In the United States, current formula products continue to be sure and nourishing, he said.

“But there have been a lot of science and we want FDA rules to align themselves with the most recent science around the world,” he said.

Here is what you need to know about the Speed Stork operation:

What is the fight against infants and why do so many babies consume it?

Infantile preparation is a produced product, generally made from cow or soy milk, which is intended to imitate human breast milk for 12 months. It can be the only source of nutrition or complement breastfeeding.

FDA regulations require infants to contain 30 specific nutrients, with minimum levels for all and maximum levels for 10 of them.

The ingredients vary, but all formulas must have a balance of calories from proteins, carbohydrates and fats which reflect what is in breast milk.

Federal directives recommend that babies be exclusively breastfed during the first six months of life and that parents continue to breastfeed for the first year or more while adding new foods to the child’s food.

Parents use a formula when a mother cannot or choose not to breastfeed for a wide range of reasons, including medical conditions, work conflicts, to allow other family members to help and other situations.

Why does the government now examine the baby’s formula?

Kennedy announced the examination of infants in March as part of his program “Make America Healthy Again” for the American food supply.

Examination of the FDA will include increased tests for heavy metals and other contaminants as well as a nutrient examination, agencies said.

On Wednesday, American health officials will hold a two -hour round table on infants preparations.

What problems will it cover?

The FDA requests new scientific data and information on the question of whether the ingredients required in the infant’s preparation must be added, deleted or modified. The deadline for comments is September 11.

Scientists say that a review has been expected for a long time with regard to the most recent data on the composition of breast milk and the way babies digest and absorb nutrients in breast milk and formula.

In addition, they want the FDA to examine how American formulas compare themselves to those made elsewhere, said Bridget Young, who studies infant nutrition at the University of Rochester.

“How do our regulations differ?” She said. “It may be time for them to relocate their regulations and consider potential international harmonization.”

An international alignment could have reduced the crisis in the preparation of American infants in 2022, when contamination closed an Abbott factory, causing shortages of one month for American parents, said Young.

What about specific ingredients?

In recent years, some parents have looked for infant preparations made in Europe with the conviction that products made abroad are healthier options, experts said.

Formula regulations in the United States and Europe, including requirements for nutrients and tests, differ somewhat, but are generally similar, said Abrams.

“The differences between the United States and Europe should not be considered” higher “or” better “or” larger “in each other,” he said.

However, iron, for example, is included at higher levels in American formulas than in Europe – and Abrams suggested that US officials could consider reducing iron targets.

Other components have been added to the formula in recent years. They include docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, an essential omega-3 fatty acid and breast milk oligosaccharides, complex sugars that are breast milk but not in cow’s milk. Although they can be beneficial, they are not necessary.

“These have been added to certain formulas, but not to other formulas, so we want to take a look,” said Abrams.

Many parents have raised concerns about formula ingredients such as added sugars and seed oils, which are also targeted by Kennedy as a wider food supply.

Recent research suggests that added sugars such as glucose and corn syrup solids in infant preparations can be linked to weight gain in children. Young said most of the experts agree that lactose, the main type of sugar found in breast milk, is preferred.

In the United States, infantiles contain seed oils, said Young. But it is because there are a finite number of vegetable oils which provide the essential saturated and unsaturated fats that babies need.

“They must provide the variety of fatty acids you see in breast milk,” she said.

Made correctly, the FDA infants’ review would take “at least a year,” said Abrams. And it will require a large comment from several government agencies, formula manufacturers and consumers.

“No shortcut is possible and no examination, white paper or even the committee report will only be enough to do it correctly,” he said.
