Defending Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 13 seed Holger Röhn.

The match, which featured an astonishing 37 shots, was marked by multiple stoppages, including a long medical timeout and a net malfunction.

Sinner, who was suffering from illness before the match, admitted that he was struggling with his fitness early on, and revealed that he did not warm up before the match.

“Today was a very strange morning. I didn’t even warm up today, and I tried to get on the field as best I could. I knew in my mind before the match that I would struggle today,” said Sinner, who indicated that he was mentally prepared for a tough match.

The match saw Sinner take a medical break after the doctor and physiotherapist visited him in the third set.

Ron, who received treatment on his knee during the break, had to wait more than 11 minutes before play resumed.

Further delay occurred when a net error caused the match to be halted for nearly 20 minutes in the fourth set.

Despite the interruptions, Sinner remained focused and sealed his win with a dominating performance.

“I served very well. The good shots gave me the confidence to keep fighting,” Sinner said.

“In my time off the court, the doctor and I talked a little bit. That helped me today and also showed that this tournament has a great organization. They really care about the players.”

Sinner, who has now won 18 straight matches on hard courts, will face either Alex de Minaur or Alex Michelsen for a place in the semi-finals.
