Argentina began a long -awaited trial on Tuesday from the medical team of football star Diego Maradona, who died in 2020, in a case that caused emotions in the country of South America where the World Cup winner is still respected.

The family and the accused arrived at the court on the outskirts of the capital, Buenos Aires. Maradona nurses, brain wounds and psychiatrist are among those accused of murder of neglect.

Seven members of the court’s medical team are scheduled to continue in a trial. The eighth member faces a trial by the jury in July.

Maradona died at home in November 2020 from heart failure at the age of 60 while recovering from surgery to remove a blood clot a few days ago. His medical team rejects the concerns of “simple killing with a final intention” in the treatment of the former Boca player and the Napoli player.

If they are convicted, they may face the prison sentence ranging from eight and 25 years.

“There are more than sufficient elements to prove that Diego has not been treated properly,” said Mario Bodri, a lawyer for one of Maradona’s sons who submitted the case to the reporters.

The lawyer added: “Justice was accused of killing with a final intent. Let us hope that justice will take place, and this is what we all want,” the lawyer added.

Local media reported that the eighth defendant, nurse Dahna Madrid, will be tried separately in July.
